Since I quit my last 'job', (yeah yeah, I'm still contract-consulting) I've taken a temporary position as Manager Of Operations (my choice of title, theirs is "Level 3 Technical Support") at a Toronto ISP for a couple months. The work is pretty similar to mWare + Server North type stuff; making customers happy, putting out fires, running the show, cleaning up the messes from there being almost no tech bodies for several months.

I'm presently crashing at Dave's in Oshawa, but the near 2 hour commute is going to kill me. Seriously - up at 0630, on the road by 0715, in the office by 0930... work till 1730 or later - home by 2000! WTF? Alas, I don't think this'll last, I need to find something a) closer to downtown Toronto, b) somewhere I can come & go at all hours without waking everyone up, c) with parking, d) near $1000/mo and short-term leasing.

I've been here since Wednesday and already feeling homesick, even though I'll be back in Ottawa in a week (for a week.) I miss my bed, mom's food, my guitars & stereo, but mostly my family. I sure don't enjoy the driving, buying gas every second trip and pollution.... but the selection and availability of computer gear is pretty sweet, no vindictive ex-Clients here (yet ;-) and the GigaBit ethernet Internet access is nice; just the other day I setup a 20Mbit SDSL (!) link for the NANOG conference.

Anyway, working myself to death as usual, but I'm hoping that'll settle. I am serious about needing a place, if anyone knows of a sublet or decent place, preferrably near a major downtown TTC line, let me know.

I know exactly how you are feeling! Feeling homesick sucks, and I am homesick almost every day! Except I am not a mere 6 hours away, but 26! It's brutal being away from the fam, but being away means care packages and going home is much more sweet! It means they miss you too, and make your homecoming extra special, well at least that's what happens to me! Good times! I'm jealous you get to go home soon. I'm not going home till March Break! Good luck and have fun.
